Pedelec riders are repeatedly involved in serious accidents. Most of them belong to the over 49 age group. The most common causes of accidents include riding errors ("solo accidents"), but also disregarding right of way rules, errors when turning and braking, distraction by technical devices or inadequate technical equipment. The reasons for this are both misconduct on the part of cyclists and/or other road users. In addition, cyclists and pedelec riders ride without helmets, which repeatedly causes serious injuries in traffic accidents.

The Wesel district police authority wants to do something about this development: The colleagues from the Traffic Accident Prevention Department of the Traffic Directorate have been offering pedelec training courses for several years. These consist of three sections. At the beginning of the free seminar, there is a theoretical overview of traffic rules relating to bicycles.

Participants can use the pedelec simulator

Afterwards, participants can ride on our pedelec simulator. The fast speed and other riding characteristics of the bikes can be trained with computer support. Participants "ride" through a virtual traffic world with the help of the simulator. More than 30 different, short film sequences with a variety of traffic situations are stored in the computer.

The third part of the seminar involves the colleagues setting up a course. Here, the riders can do braking and skill exercises with their own pedelecs!
