You need to know this!

You have to overcome these hurdles

Our selection process consists of several stages: the pre-selection, the PC test, an assessment center, the police medical examination and the post-selection. Once you have successfully completed all stages, you are almost part of the team.

The preselection

The documents you submit with your application will be checked as part of the "pre-selection" process. If necessary, you will be asked to provide further documents. You will undergo the PC test and the police medical examination at the Münster training center of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Office for Police Training, Further Training and Personnel Affairs (LAFP NRW). You will be invited electronically by the LAFP NRW.

The PC test

The PC test checks your analytical skills, your learning ability, your memory and your (written) communication skills. The test lasts around two hours and consists of various groups of tasks. The tasks deal with word analogies, figure sequences, number symbols, syllogisms, spelling and punctuation as well as your memory. You should prepare well for this test. Specialist literature in which the types of tasks are presented is available in bookshops. The PC test is followed by a "formal interview". Here your application documents will be checked for completeness. Among other things, you must state whether you have tattoos or whether criminal proceedings are currently pending against you. You will then receive the result of the PC test. If you pass this test, you will have to take another computer-based test to check your reaction speed, attention and ability to concentrate. If you fail a test, the selection process is initially over for you. You can then reapply for the following recruitment year at the earliest.

The assessment center

You will complete the assessment center at one of our recruitment and training authorities in Aachen, Bielefeld, Bonn, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen, Hagen, Cologne or Münster. You will be invited by the respective authority. Where you attend the assessment center depends on where you live. If you live outside North Rhine-Westphalia, a selection authority for the assessment center will be determined together with you. During the selection process, you will only be invited to the subsequent stages if you have successfully passed the previous stage. Your social and communication skills will be tested in the assessment center. You will have to complete two role plays, give a presentation and take part in an interview. The first role-play is a conflict discussion that you have to conduct with a trained role-player (police officer). The aim is to deal with a conflict that may arise in a police environment. This interview lasts about five minutes. You will have 15 minutes to prepare for the following presentation. It is about current everyday topics. The presentation should last about five minutes. In the second role play, the situation in a police headquarters management office (comparable to a secretariat) is simulated. Here you have to process written documents and respond to telephone calls. In the final interview, you will be asked to talk about your previous educational and/or professional development and answer questions about your career motivation and other aspects of the police profession.

The police medical examination

This medical check-up checks whether you are fit for police duty. Among other things, your hearing and eyesight as well as your physical fitness (ECG) will be tested. Your height will also be measured and your body mass index determined. Finally, you will be examined by a police doctor. It is possible that further specialist medical reports may be required. However, this will be discussed with you in detail.

The post-selection

Once you have successfully completed all sections up to this point, your application will be processed further as part of the so-called "post-selection" process. All documents will be checked again for completeness and accuracy. If necessary, you will be asked to submit documents again. Depending on your result in the selection process, you will also receive further information in this section about a possible appointment to the police civil service of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Many opportunities, many tasks, do a lot of good.

In the police service, we think in terms of performance. We know from experience that good performance can only be achieved if our colleagues feel understood. That is why we focus on mutual appreciation and constructive debate in police work. We know no cultural or national barriers. And team performance is more than just the sum of individual achievements. We value a balanced relationship between professional and private life. This is the only way you can deliver the performance we expect and reward from you.

Develop your potential!

Patrol duty? Investigation service? Task force? After your studies and your first assignment, you have many options. You can specialize in different areas of work. For example, in the investigative service of a criminal investigation department, in the special units, as a service dog handler, in the helicopter squadron, police riding squadron or as a teacher in basic and advanced training. It's up to you to make something of it.

Police work is basically divided into the following areas:
Emergency response and operations as well as crime control and traffic accident prevention.

Danger prevention and deployment

Most police officers work on patrol duty. This patrol service is there for citizens around the clock: with the patrol car, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot. The missions you have to deal with on patrol duty are varied. You will record traffic accidents, secure the scene of the accident, secure evidence and traces and reconstruct the course of the accident. You will have to settle disputes, rescue people from emergency situations, protect endangered properties, stop vehicles, check people and vehicles, arrest and search people, secure or confiscate property, search buildings, pursue fleeing people and vehicles, question people, search for offenders, order blood samples and write reports. If you join a riot police unit, you will support the district police authorities and other federal states. For example, you will be deployed at demonstrations, soccer matches, nuclear transports and state visits. You should keep yourself physically fit by doing lots of sport. Special tasks require special knowledge and equipment. These include special units, police riders, service dog handlers, helicopter pilots and the water police. You can apply for these tasks after you have gained a few years of experience in patrol duty and in the riot police.

Crime control

In the Criminal Investigation Department, you investigate crime scenes, secure evidence and traces, establish connections and interrogate perpetrators, witnesses and injured parties. You arrest perpetrators and solve crimes. The spectrum ranges from property and drug offenses, robbery and assault offenses, motor vehicle offenses and fraud, violent and sexual offenses, arson investigations, economic and computer crime to politically motivated crime.

Traffic accident investigation

An important task here is to prevent traffic accidents. Preventive traffic information and education should make the public aware of the risks and personal responsibility in road traffic. In addition, positive behavioral patterns should be conveyed and cooperative behavior should be emphasized. The target group for road safety education is primarily children, young adults and senior citizens. Another instrument is traffic monitoring. You check whether the traffic rules are being observed and whether vehicles meet the technical requirements. You also check whether drivers have drunk alcohol or taken drugs, whether they are wearing their seat belts and are not using their mobile phones. You check truck drivers for driving and rest periods, compliance with speed limits and safety distances.

All in all, the police service consists of extremely varied tasks in which you take on a lot of responsibility and can have a positive impact.

What Facebook learns

What data Facebook stores in detail and how the company uses this data is not exactly known. What is certain is that Facebook not only stores data that is entered directly by users, but also records the actions of Facebook users - presumably without gaps. Facebook also learns - the most important data of the computer system from which a user logs into the network - including IP address, processor type and browser version including plug-ins and - every visit to websites (widget data) on which a "Like" button is installed. The IP address is also transmitted. If the visitor to the third-party site is a Facebook user and has already logged in to Facebook from the same computer, Facebook can also determine their identity. This enables Facebook to investigate the preferences, inclinations and contacts of its users very precisely and beyond Facebook usage.
